Yarra Junction Estate

Boutique wines from the heart of Victoria's Yarra Valley region.

Yarra Junction Estate

Victoria’s Yarra Valley is a very special area for the Australian wine growing industry, thanks to its typically Victorian cool climate and different fertile soil types. Renowned for producing world class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sparkling, the region welcomes visitors from all corners of the world and is home to a mesmerising selection of boutique wineries.

The Yarra Junction Estate is located within the ‘Upper’ Yarra region, with the lush 18-acre vineyard stationed 505 feet above sea level on a North-facing slope. This spot of the Yarra Valley receives high rainfall, with vines flourishing on top of the clay loam and volcanic mix soil to make exceptional-quality Yarra Valley wines – especially the Sparkling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietals.

Charles Smedley – the man behind the wines

Yarra Valley local Charles Smedley established the Yarra Junction Estate in 1999, redeveloping the entire site from scratch and carefully managing it to host finely-balanced premium Pinot Noir varietals.

Charles has over 27 years’ experience in the wine industry, working in Australia, Europe and Asia across a range of senior production, retail and viticultural roles for international brands.

Working very closely with Vineyard Manager Julian Parrott, the pair proudly work with a ‘listen to nature’ philosophy. Weather conditions lead their activity, and when the timing is perfect vines are lovingly hand-pruned and hand-harvested at low yield.

Yarra Valley favourites

Pinot Noir

The Yarra Valley is recognised as one of the best regions in the world for growing the highly-sensitive Pinot Noir varietal, which uniquely translates distinct land and climatic conditions into the taste of the wine.

The Yarra Junction Estate is home to award-winning 'Burgundian clone' Pinot Noir vines; our Pinot Noir delicately displays an earthy, warm spice savour, with silky tannins complimenting red fruit characters.

Yarra Junction Estate Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2020

“This is wonderfully fruited and complex on the nose showing dark berry, game, dried herb and toasted spice aromas with a hint of earthy mushrooms. The refined palate delivers juicy flavours together with fleshy texture and silky tannins, leading to a seductively elegant finish. At its best: 2023 to 2030.” - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, 95 Points

“A bright light ruby. Fecund strawberry, sour cherry, rhubarb and an Asian sachet of cardamom, five-spice and tamarind. Dill and mescal, too, from a solid whole bunch quotient. Light-weight of feel, belying a core of expanding sweetness and impressive intensity of flavour. The oak, palpable but well nestled; the acidity, juicy; the tannins, slinky, lithe and herbal. A fine contemporary expression of Upper Yarra Pinot, boasting succulence, a svelte air and plenty of crunch.” - Ned Goodwin, 92 Points

“If you are looking for a complex and early drinking style of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, this wine will hit the spot with quality winemaking and fruit coming together to create a deliciously drinkable style. It opens with beautifully perfumed aromas – cranberry, raspberry, cinnamon stick and more ground spice with some floral rose petal delicacy adding interest. It is one of those pinots that gives so much aromatically. On the palate it is pure silk – red and dark earthy fruits that are open and fleshy supported by silky tannins to a long and engaging finish. It could do with a little more concentration but offers plenty of pinot personality to enjoy over the next three or four years.” - Angus Hughson, The Wine Pilot, 93 Points

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is regarded as the Yarra Valley’s premium grape variety. Hot Valley days balanced with the cool night time temperatures help to produce that fine acidic zest Chardonnay lovers adore.

The Yarra Junction Estate Chardonnay displays a creamy mid-palate softness, boosted with citrus fruit flavouring and cashew brioche notes on the nose.

Yarra Junction Estate Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2020

“A gorgeously styled Chardonnay offering white flesh nectarine, fig, vanilla, hazelnut and brioche characters on the nose, followed by a concentrated palate displaying lovely flow and persistency. It’s creamy and supple yet properly structured by bright acidity, finishing superbly long and engaging. At its best: 2023 to 2030.” - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, 95 Points

“A taut and tensile mid-weighted Chardonnay of precision, thrust and intensity. Loaded with glazed quince and stone fruit accents, the juicy acid line melds effortlessly with the oak, providing thrilling length and a saline, pungent riff to a core of mineral energy. This would be even better if it went through full malolactic conversion, but a true exemplar of fine cool climate Chardonnay all the same.” - Ned Goodwin, 93 Points

“This Chardonnay has the classy and complex winemaking regularly seen at this winery. It’s a prime example of the modern Australian Chardonnay style and is a wine where finesse takes the lead role. Bright but delicate in colour, the fruit also follows suit with an array of citrus and floral aromas plus some complex savoury edges, with a touch of gun flint and continental delicatessen thrown in the mix. The palate is more melon and citrus wound up in understated oak with bright and tangy acidity drawing out a silky finish. Very well made and balanced, it beautifully shows the subtle side of chardonnay making this wine perfect to enjoy with raw shellfish or a delicate French Brie.” – Angus Hughson, The Wine Pilot, 93 Points
